Barbara E. Ungar, Esq., with extensive criminal, civil and family court litigation experience, has continued to champion the causes of the defense in her representation of her clients throughout the State. She formerly served as an Assistant County Counsel in the Essex County Counsel’s Office in Newark, New Jersey from 1988 through 1990 and developed expertise in mental health law.
She was then employed as a Deputy Attorney General with the Division of Criminal Justice of the Office of the Attorney General of New Jersey from 1990 through 1992, assigned to the Civil Remedies and Forfeiture Bureau, where she specialized in the handling of complex civil forfeiture actions involving narcotics and environmental forfeitures and related actions. She was then employed as a Deputy Attorney General, with the Division of Criminal Justice, assigned to the Labor Prosecutions Unit, from 1992 through 1999, where she developed expertise in the handling of complex unemployment fraud, wage and hour and related fraud and tax prosecutions.

Since 1999, she has been engaged in the private practice of law. She is the past Chair of the Municipal Court Practice Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association having served two consecutive terms. Ms. Ungar is also the Past Chair of the Criminal Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She also served as the Chair of the Subcommittee on Judicial Independence in the Municipal Courts for the New Jersey State Bar Association with four Public Hearings held in the State.
She continues to be an active member of the New Jersey State Bar Association and of the Middlesex County Bar Association. Ms. Ungar serves as a member of the Lawyer Wellness Committee and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Municipal Court Practice Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association. She is also an active member of the National Association for Criminal Defense Lawyers and the National College for DUI Defense. Ms. Ungar is also an active member of the New Jersey Women Lawyers Association. She is also an active member of the Middlesex County Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Edison Chamber of Commerce and the Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Ungar is also a participating attorney in the Rutgers University Student Legal Services program at Rutgers University.
